Taharah

Performed by the Chevra Kadisha (Holy Society), taharah is the physical cleansing and preparation of the body for burial, in addition to the recitation of prayers requesting forgiveness and eternal peace. This is a religious act, performed only by Jews, but not by immediate family members for whom it may be too painful.
