OBITUARY
Joan “Joanie” Gaines passed away on Monday, July 10, 2023 at 72 years old. She is survived by her step mother Kathy Gaines of Marietta, GA, her younger brother Don Gaines of Marietta, GA, and her sister and brother-in-law Sally and David Moorhead, and her nephew and niece, Ryan and Madison Moorhead, of Rockville, MD.
Joanie was a native Atlantan, and her grandparents, Dr. John and Dora Kahn, were founding members of the Ahavath Achim Synagogue where Joanie attended sunday school. Born on February 15, 1951 to Harold and Peggy Kahn Gaines, Joanie spent her early years in the Morningside area. She and her older brother Rick, who passed away in 2010, were especially close and kept things lively in their house on Reeder Circle. Joanie moved to the Buckhead area during her middle teen years where she attended Dykes High School and was active in clubs and sports. She especially enjoyed playing basketball and football.
Following high school, Joanie attended the University of South Carolina for one year. She viewed that as a transformative year where she was elected to the student government and worked to change many rules to which the student body objected. She also participated in protests and sit ins while there.
Joanie had an adventurous adult life. She loved to travel and visited Italy on many occasions where she had made many friends. She also loved all things Italian and spent much time cooking Italian pasta dishes. She was an accomplished cook who did not need a recipe to create an amazing meal.
Joanie was tough, having survived two bouts of cancer. She spent her later years at her home in Marietta where she could be found watching cooking shows every Saturday, watching football, and feeding the birds. Joanie had cats for all of her adult life and derived much joy in spending time with her beloved cat Holly. She also treasured her family, especially her nephew and niece.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, July 18th at 10:00 am at Crest Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Humane Society or the charity of your choice.

We were all deeply saddened to hear about Joanie's passing. Year's ago we lived near Joanie in the Clairmont North Townhouses & we rekindled our friendship that we had back in high school & growing up. My wife Nancy became really good friends & runnin' buddies with "The Three Stooges", Rhona Caplan, Reenie Levitt & of course, "Joanie" was the Team Leader. Along with her brother Ricky, we sure did have some good times! I'm gonna miss them all. We know how difficult this must be for yall. You can have some comfort knowing that she's in a Much Better Place, Our Sympathies & Condolences are with you and your Entire Family at this Time of Need. Our prayers are with you.

Joan was the one the first people I met in kindergarten. We were fast friends all through school….at her house, my house, sleepovers, times at the Lake, etc. Her smile would light up the room. We were friends all through high school; I was in her first wedding. While we were in touch over the last ten years I hadn’t seen her in quite a while (I live in the Northeast). I wish her last years had been better; she deserved health and happiness always. Her memory will always be a blessing to me…I remember her so fondly.

Joanie was a strong and devoted support at a time in my life when I needed her strength and solace. She had a difficult path later in life and my prayer is that she is at peace today. ??
