  • OBITUARY

Rhoda Evans Shapiro was the youngest of five siblings born to Eva and Morris Evans.  Her family moved from Brooklyn to Sparta, TN when she was young and she was that great rare combination of nice Jewish girl and country girl.  She graduated from Vanderbilt, lived in Los Angeles for a short time, and then moved back South where she met and married Gerald Shapiro.   She was a social worker for Dekalb County family children services for 40+ years while raising two sons, Maury and Ross.  She was a fantastic mother who lead by her examples of kindness, caring, wit, good humor calm, never complaining, being self-assured, and being the rock that friends and family turned to.

Her marriage to Gerald was one for the ages and admired by all.   Their parenting-by-example included never missing any activity their sons participated in from childhood, teenage years, and well into adulthood.  When they showed up at Ross' rock shows, they were obviously somebody's parents and were given the royal treatment by doormen and groupies.  They traveled the country and the world together and never sat at home.  When three grandsons came, they started over with babysitting , T-ball, pre-school events and on and on through college and beyond.  They simply never missed an event.

Although Rhoda's physical health declined over the last few years, she never lost her sense of humor or being good humored.  She continued to understand (and dish out) the family language of sarcasm.  She continued to tell her wonderful caregivers Thank You every time they did anything for her.  She rarely complained even when her physical situation was bad.

Rhoda was predeceased by her her husband Gerald and son Ross.  She is survived by son Maury (Staci), grandsons Sammy (Diana Bernath), A.J., and Reid (Jaime), and great-granddaughter Lucy Shapiro.  She is also survived by brother & sister-in-law Hyman & Loretta Shapiro and sister-in-law Peggy Evans, nieces and nephews (some who she helped raise), and extended family who she loved.  Thank you to caregivers, Eda Edwards and Knackia Williams.  Your love and care for Rhoda for 3+ years was above and beyond.
