  • OBITUARY

Dr. Jacob Engelhardt, adored husband, father, and Zade (grandfather), passed away on October 30, 2022.

Jack is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Zinnia Schonhaut Engelhardt, his children Roz (Stephen) Harris and Susann Engelhardt Shenk, and his five grandchildren Mallory Harris, Elayna Harris, Julia Harris, Aaron Shenk, and Justin Shenk. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Rose Menkes Engelhardt and his brother, Albert Engelhardt.

A native of Toronto, Jack attended New York University, earning a PhD in Mathematics. Jack and Zinnia made their home in Savannah, Georgia. Jack had a long career at Savannah State University. He also developed a passion for real estate and spent countless hours purchasing and refurbishing older homes.

Jack was a voracious learner, always fiercely curious. He spoke multiple languages including Russian, French, Hebrew, and Yiddish. He loved photography and developing his own black and whites. He loved a good laugh, especially if he made the joke. He loved bicycling, history, anthropology, swimming, roller blading, reading, and translating books from one language to another. He loved machinery and figuring out how things work. He loved nothing more than being around his family.

Remembrances: 102The Yiddish Book Center 1 West Street Amherst, MA 01001 yiddishbookcenter.org

The funeral will be at 2 o’clock on Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at North Atlanta Memorial Park, 5188 Winters Chapel Road, Atlanta, with Rabbi Mark Zimmerman officiating.
