  • OBITUARY

Gabriel Lawrence Pressman of Brookhaven, Georgia passed away unexpectedly October 13 at the age of 43. Gabriel grew up in Atlanta, graduating from Riverwood High School in Sandy Springs before attending the University of Georgia, where he was a member of Tau Epsilon Phi fraternity. He graduated from Georgia State University with degrees in international economics and modern languages and continued his studies at Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia in Venice, Italy, where he earned degrees in economics and business management and was the valedictorian of international students in his graduating class. He went on to earn an advanced degree from Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia in international management, graduating summa cum laude.

Gabriel was a man of many talents and passions – he was fluent in Italian, a gifted filmmaker, talented actor, marathon runner, and political activist. He produced videos for the prestigious Venice Biennale arts festival, acted in several Georgia-based television shows and movies (he was particularly excited when working on Marvel and DC projects), and was heavily involved in local politics through the Young Democrats of Georgia and various political campaigns. An avid traveler, Gabriel spent much time in Europe even after completing his academic studies abroad, visiting numerous friends across the continent several times a year. He also loved traveling to New York and Los Angeles to visit his sisters, brothers-in-law, niece and four nephews, whom he doted on and who absolutely adored him in return.

Gabriel never met a stranger, and was loved by all whose lives he touched here in Atlanta and across the globe. He was thoughtful, adventurous, funny, passionate, and cared deeply about his friends and family, never missing a birthday or special occasion for his loved ones. Gabriel made everyone around him laugh with his quick wit and humor. He was curious, fearless, and always open to anything.

Though Gabriel was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer last year and faced other health issues, he remained incredibly active, continuing his passion for long-distance running, his busy travel schedule, and his campaign work on behalf of the Democratic Party. His cancer was in remission at the time of his passing, and he continued to endure other health issues with grit and grace. Gabriel was defined by his full-throttled embrace of life and all it had to offer: every new adventure, new country, new friend, new passion or skill to master, and new experience. Though he was taken from us too soon, his loved ones take comfort in knowing he lived a full life in just 43 years.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Louis and Fay Lewitz and Vicky and Joel Pressman. He is survived by his parents, Sandi and Richard Pressman of Brookhaven; sister Amanda Pressman-Smoot and brother-in-law Matt Smoot of New York City; sister Stephanie Pressman and brother-in-law Russ Gooberman of Los Angeles; adoring niece and nephews Evan, Ari, Lulu, Julian, and Milo; and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins, all of whom will miss Gabriel dearly.

A graveside funeral will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, October 23rd at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs. The funeral will be livestreamed.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Gabriel’s memory be made to the Kidney Cancer Program Fund at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University, 1762 Clifton Road, Suite 1400, Atlanta, GA 30322.  To sign the online guestbook and view the Zoom link, visit www.dresslerjewishfunerals.com.  Dressler's, 770-451-4999.

Dear Richard & Sandi, I am so very sorry for your loss. I am really without words to express the sorrow I feel for your whole family. Since I am retired I truly miss our meetings with Richard, but Cristi always tells me when you have come in. Just know you will be in my prayers and thoughts at this most difficult time.

  • Shea Roberts

I only had the pleasure of knowing Gabe for a short time, but I'm so grateful for every minute I had with him. It was clear from the beginning that Gabe was a very thoughtful and intelligent person. We shared our dedication to electing Democrats and I'm grateful for his contributions to my campaign. We also shared a love of travel and talked about my family's recent trip to Venice and his recent visit to Ireland where coincidentally my daughter is in college. I was honored to attend his graveside service this weekend. Listening to his friends and family deepened my regret that I didn't have more time with him. He was such a special person and I will miss him. All of you who loved him remain in my prayers. Sincerely, Shea

I am a part of Conversazione Italiano, Atlanta. It has been such a pleasure to get to know Gabri over the last few years, because of our participation in this lovely group. I will treasure our times together and conversations - in Italian and English - often centered on Italy and travel. I will miss him terribly. Gabri will always hold a warm, tender spot in our hearts.

  • Ida Pecorelli

Dear Gabriel, We met in Venice some time ago. Venice, a beautiful city which we both loved so much. We were introduced by John and Valentina. I have a dear memory of the times we spent together, you were such a wonderful person: a fun-loving and friendly man, kind and attentive, a gentleman. Goodbye my friend. A big hug from me, Ida.

  • Barbara Marrone

  • Evan A Paris

My love and deepest condolences. Gabe was such a good person and I was very sorry to hear of his passing. I had the pleasure of getting to know Gabe at TEP. Whenever Gabe and I hung out we always had a good time and good stories to tell as a result! I’m sad to say that, however much time that was, in retrospect, it wasn’t enough. Much love and big hugs.

  • Valentina Temporin

Hi Gabriel, we all look a little serious in this photo, but what a fun time we had in Chioggia! It was a pleasure and an honor to meet you. You always had a light around you, and you had the ability to convey pure energy in every person you came into relationship with. When we learned of your disease, you were the one who gave us strength and courage. You had the rare ability to go through problems lightly, living each day as a precious gift. You were an angel, how fortunate to have had you by my side even if for a short time, you touched my heart.

The Democratic Party of Georgia sends love and light to all the family and loved ones of Gabriel.

  • Marta

I knew Gabriel was a cool guy, even before I met him! I had the chance to work on a project with a group of incredible people and Gabriel was part of it. One day he came to Italy and we spent some hours with the team. We had a lunch together and I remember his curious eyes and our talks about travels and life. There was something special about him, a kind soul and a gentle attitude. I am sending the biggest hug and all of my love to his family. Love and light, Marta

  • Florian Gabriel

I met Gabriel at GSU in 2012/2013. He was often involved with our group of French and Italian international students. We later met a few times in Venice while I was studying. Gabriel was a friendly, joyful, smart man, with great energy and genuine kindness. The type of person you like to have around, who will always put a smile on your face. We worked together on a group project for a class we had in common at GSU, and I remember thinking there was a big artist in him. His approach to things was unconventional, his curiosity and creativity were refreshing. I haven't seen him for years, but I have fond memory of Gabriel. He definitely left his mark on this world. My deepest condolences to his family.

  • Steve Fox

Richard--I was so saddened to learn of your loss and extend my deepest condolences to you and your family.

  • Erin ONeil

I was so sad to hear of Gabriel’s passing. I met him a long time ago in the Atlanta Young Democrats, and we were good friends for a time. He was very smart, witty, optimistic, and ethical. We shared a similar sense of humor and kind of bonded over that, as he was quite funny. His eyes would kind of light up when he had really good jokes. Most of all, though, Gabe stands out in my memory for being a genuinely good person, something that is increasingly rare these days. He always did the right thing, he was kind (even with difficult people), and everyone liked him. I’m glad I was able to know him, and glad to see he lived such a full life surrounded by family, friends, and new adventures. I am so sorry for your loss.

  • Clarice Oser Parver

To the Pressman family, I did not meet Gabriel, although from reading all about him, I feel like I knew him. What an amazing young man who definitely lived life to the fullest. You should be proud of all of his accomplishments and hold every memory of him close to your heart. I am so sorry for your tremendous loss.My heart goes out to you all.

To Sandi, Richard, Amanda, Stephanie, and families and to the rest of Gabe's larger family and worldwide community, I am so deeply saddened and sorry about Gabe's passing and only wish there were words that could be a source of comfort to you all. Though it has been years since I saw Gabe last, I always always remember at family gatherings how thoughtful and kind he was when we saw each other, always taking a genuine interest in people around him, no matter how much time had past and no matter the depth of connection. I am so sorry for the heartache and heartbreak that family and friends will continue to feel - this says so much about how Gabe is and will continue to be dearly loved. He clearly made an incredible mark on this world. May his memory forever be a blessing.

  • Ann Olim

  • Elaine DeSimone

Sending my sincere condolences to Sandi and Richard, and the rest of Gabe's family. I only met Gabe within the last year, through our local democrats, and I wish I had gotten to spend more time with him. Someone said it earlier - he did put people at easy, was so friendly, funny, and caring. I will miss him! I will think of Gabe often as we continue to champion for the causes that were so important to him.

I’m very saddened to hear of Gabe’s passing. I knew him through Young Democrats and everything this obituary says about him is how I remember him. He was funny, sweet, often quiet but always dependable. He had way of putting people around him at ease, and for me, his memory will be a blessing. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.

Gabe was the nicest person anyone could meet. He and I were fraternity brothers in TEP. Even though I had not seen him in the past 20 years, I still remember his kindness and wit. May his memory be a blessing.

  • josh needle

I enjoyed being around Gabe. He always made me smile. After graduating from UGA I would see Gabe randomly at Georgia State and then again most recently in November of 2019. He was showing me his footage of being a baliff in a show and how he was meeting all these famous people. Always a pleasure getting to spend a few moments crossing paths with him. Always a nice guy and I am so sorry to hear of his passing. He will be missed.

  • Lillian Woolf

I was devastated to hear the news of Gabriel's passing. We had become good friends over the past year and I frequently drove him to his infusion treatments. Those 2-3 hours of time together were special as we talked, laughed and enjoyed our friendship. I knew Gabriel through the DeKalb Democrats so I was aware of his passion for politics. He was such a thoughtful, caring and gentle person, full of life, good sense of humor and always considerate of others. It was clear to me he loved his family, especially his niece and nephews. One did not have to be his friend very long before realizing he was going to make a lasting impact on you. I will hold him in my heart forever. Gabriel, you brought so much joy to so many.

  • Lucia Scarano

I met Gabe on the set of Doom Patrol and we connected as actors and as Italophiles. I invited him to join the meetup group I discovered. From there, beautiful friendships grew as many of us shared a love of the Italian language, country, and food. Gabriele (we always used his Italian name) will be sorely missed. We will raise many glasses of prosecco to his memory. I will miss his smile, the on-set stories we shared, and the fabulous commentaries of his many adventures. His life was a blessing.

  • LaRue Martin

Riposa in pace, caro amico. Gabriel was a loyal and valued member of our Italian conversation groups for the past several years, and his presence will be very much missed. So shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. Our group will not be the same without him. Our sincere condolences to family and other friends. Rest in peace, dear friend.

  • Alisa Hamilton

Reading through these beautiful messages about Gabe, I am not surprised how many lives he touched. He was such a kind, thoughtful person. I met Gabe on a whim while I was handing out signs and sending people to canvass out of the old Kroger shopping center. Somehow he and I jump started a stranger's car that day, and we made her promise to vote. That's how I will always remember him - as someone who cared deeply about others and about making the world a better place. My deepest condolences go out to his family. We lost him way too soon.

  • Ellen Rafshoon

Gabe and I bonded through Democratic Party politics. He was my canvass partner and we talked about travel nonstop as we went house to house. Because of Gabe I’m definitely going to Galway but won’t waste my time on Prague. He was super smart and creative. I turned to him for help on a book I’m writing. Gabe helped me shape the format and I will be sure to acknowledge his contribution As I head out this week to politick I will be thinking of Gabe and missing him terribly. May his memory be a blessing and a reminder to live every day like he did. Fully and with a sense of wonder.

  • Alex Pollak

Loyalty, kindness, compassion, wit and humour, spontaneity and adventure are just some of the words that describe my dear friend Gab Pre who tragically and unexpectedly passed away on Friday. And my life was fuller, richer, for having known him. Gabe came into my life twenty five years ago when I was asked to be a ’big brother’ to a new pledge at my fraternity Tau Epsilon Phi. And that was the start of a beautiful friendship that took us on many adventures: from hiking the Georgia Mountains to whisky tasting in the Scottish Highlands, from paddleboarding and running a half marathon together in LA to drinking aperol spritzes in Venice while he waxed lyrical about his beloved city and cycling from London to Brighton. When he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer a year ago, instead of retreating and feeling sorry for himself, he squeezed every ounce out of life, taking the opportunity to travel far & wide and spend time with his loved ones. I feel honoured that my family and I got to spend his last birthday together: riding rollercoasters and eating Italian gelato. The last thing we did together was see his favourite band, Coldplay, at Wembley Stadium in London this August, which feels like an appropriate send off for a man who made the most of his time on this planet. Rest in peace my good friend.
