HRMC Auxiliary Scholarship in memory of Rita Jonas

Rita Goldweber Jonas, 94, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2022, with her family in Johns Creek, Georgia. Mom was the nurturer who taught her four kids to be kind and generous.

Rita was born to Ruth and Emanuel Goldweber in Coral Gables, Florida, marrying Arthur Jonas in 1951 and settling in Satellite Beach in 1958.  She was an active volunteer in her children’s lives, leading several Sea Park Elementary School Parent-Teacher Association committees before becoming PTA President.  Rita served as Den Mother for her son’s Cub Scout Den and then led a 4-H Club for her three daughters.  She was also served in responsible positions in the Satellite Beach Woman’s Club and United Order of True Sisters and supported the Satellite High School Band/Scorpionette Program.  Her volunteer spirit continued with the Holmes Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, providing 30 years and tens of thousands of hours of service time.  Rita’s leadership was recognized when she served as President of the Auxiliary and was selected as a 2012 Holmes Regional Medical Center Humanitarian of the Year.  She continued to serve for many years after her term, while making life-long friends.

Rita kept a warm home for all, “adopting” her children’s close friends.  She was an innovative cook, making delicious and healthy meals over many years and once teaching her son to make seafood gumbo via the telephone (long before the internet, videoconferencing, and YouTube).   She always put others first, providing an empathetic ear to those who needed someone with whom to talk.  An ardent Miami Hurricanes fan, Rita wore green and orange every football weekend even when her beloved husband donned his orange and blue.

Rita was predeceased by her husband Art.  She is survived by son Jon Jonas (Sally), of Belleville IL; daughters Elisabeth Jonas, Rebecca Rubin (Craig), Janet Mann (Ira); grandchildren Pamelyn Rubin and Jonah Mann, Kayla Mann, and Jessica Mann; and her beloved cat Gracie, all of the Atlanta area.  Special thank you to Rhonda Johnson, Yolanda Dismuke, and Shon Brown for your exceptional care of Mom.

Rita will be interred with her late husband Art at Georgia National Cemetery.  Memorial and visitation will be announced via Facebook.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to Health First Foundation, 1350 S. Hickory Street, Melbourne, Florida 32901, with note that the donation is for HRMC Auxiliary Scholarship in memory of Rita Jonas. Arrangements by Dressler’s Jewish Funeral Care, 770.451.4999.
