  • OBITUARY

Melvin (“Duffy”) Stanley Maron, age 90, formerly of Palm Beach and recently of Atlanta, passed away on Thursday, January 13, 2022 at his residence. Mel was born in Queens, New York to Fannie (Marcus) and Joseph Maron on April 21, 1931. He met his wife Bunny Maron at the age of 17, she 16. Together, they had two children – Jodi and Glenn. He went on to attend City College, where he received a degree in accounting. He also served in the army. Mel enjoyed a distinguished career as a film distribution executive and entrepreneur. He started his career as an office boy at MGM and then became MGM's road show manager, at which time he distributed a number of films including: Dr. Zhivago, Gone With the Wind (70 mm re-release), and 2001: A Space Odyssey. After leaving MGM, Mr. Maron went on to serve as an executive to several film and distribution companies including Commonwealth United, Cinema Shares, JGM and Castle Hill. During his tenure at Cinema Shares, he built the company up to become the second most important independent distribution company in the United States. He was known for his kindness and optimistic attitude and as the King of “B-Roll” Movies. He was an avid reader and loved to share “war” stories from his times in the movie business with his family and anyone who would listen. He loved being with his wife Bunny and they both loved travelling, and travel they did all over the world, mainly via ship. In his later life, he had a second act in “retirement” serving on the boards for several industry organizations, including the South Florida Motion Picture & Television Film Society, the Ft. Lauderdale Film Festival and the Palm Beach County Film & Television Commission. Mel was also a voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Mel was a very loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. His memory was impeccable and he could tell you the name of every movie theater in any town, no matter how small, in the United States. Duffy’s warm smile and kind nature will be deeply missed.

Mel Maron is survived by his wife of 68 years, Bunny Berman Maron; children, Jodi Maron Barth and Glenn (Debbie) Maron; grandchildren, Adam (Hannah) Barth, Allie (Andrew) Chinsky, Jonathan (Lucy) Barth, Drew Maron and Sara Barth; and great-grandchildren, Dylan Barth, Emmie Chinsky and Frankie Barth. Mel is predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Buddy, Howie, Don, Bea, and Evelyn. He is also survived by many adoring nieces, nephews and cousins.

Attendance in-person will be private, but the service will be viewable via Zoom link posted by Dressler's website 2:00pm, Monday, January 17th at North Atlanta Memorial Park Cemetery.  Mel’s children and family appreciate your love and care during this difficult time. We will have a celebration of life at a time when it is safe. Dressler's Jewish Funeral Care, 770-451-4999.

May Mel’s memory be a blessing. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to honor his life can be made to a charity of your choosing that is meaningful to you.
