  • Rabbi Donald and Marilyn Tam

Dear Katie,Sam, Pam, We have been out of town and returned home to read of Andy’s death. Marilyn and I were both very much saddened by this news. When Andy was in Synagogue and I would see him walking toward me, my face would always break out in a smile and my insides jump with the expectation of hearing what was bubbling over inside him on that day. Was there a sweeter soul on our planet? I do not think so. He was kind and gentle and could be so excited over something he wanted to tell us, which was much more important than the rise in the stock market, or the wonderful meal that could be had at a certain restaurant. He was one of those people in our world that gave me hope human beings were at root good and sweet. We are taught in our tradition that there are angels in our world, quietly doing their work of assuring us that there is something good at the root of life. I do believe in beings called angels who quietly give us hope when we are sad or upset, who assure us that all will be well, that the world can be good and that goodness can triumph over evil, and laughter and uplifting joy over tears of sadness and worry. I tell you I don’t know for sure about spiritual beings that travel through our lives from time to time, helping us see the light that always shines somewhere in the darkness. But I believe angles exist. They are real. They lift us up and give us hope, telling us by their lives that Gd in his goodness is real. I know this as much as I know I am a breathing human being with a soul who can guide me if I know how to listen to it. I know, because Andy Alterman lived among us as an angel- real, and sweet, spreading life, at least for me, whenever his life touched mine. And thank Gd his life did touch mine. I had the privilege of knowing him. I will miss this man who taught me to strive, to struggle, to live my life better. Marilyn and I feel a real sense of personal loss. Something very good has left our world. May Gd hold his soul gently. We send our heartfelt condolences to the Alterman family and to Katie and Sam who nurtured beauty in our midst much like the dew of heaven in early morning makes the whole word sparkle and shimmer in the sunlight. May Gd comfort all of Andy’s family along with all who grieve in Zion and Jerusalem. Rabbi Don and Marilyn Tam

Andy was such a special person who was loved by all with whom he came into contact. He was a special favorite of his Zeda, Sam Alterman, who adored him and with whom he had a close bond. I remember that they really enjoyed laughing together whenever they had the chance. Andy will always be remembered with great fondness and sympathy. Rest in peace, sweet one.

  • Cheryl Singer Weiss

Hey y’all, On behalf of Joanne Alterman Singer and her family we send our condolences. I remember Aunt Chippie bringing Andy over to visit since I was 5 years older. We played and ran around the house and we snuck in and snagged some danishes from the tray and ate them under the table in hiding. We used to have fun and I’m sad we all lost touch with each other. Sending y’all well wishes and prayers for your entire family. Joanne, Mindi, Lisa, Cheryl and our spouses.
