  • OBITUARY

Michelle Kravtin Gary, age 66, passed away surrounded by her loving family on November 2, 2021 due to complications from chronic illness. She was born October 12, 1955 in Columbus, Georgia to Maurice and Ruth Kravtin. She met the love of her life, Marc Gary, during her freshman year at Northwestern University. They married in 1977.
A 1980 graduate of Georgetown University Law Center, Michelle gave up a promising career as a corporate lawyer to selflessly devote herself to raising her two children, Philip and Tammy. Dissatisfied with the opportunities for her children to pursue a Jewish day school education in the District of Columbia, Michelle, together with Marc, was one of the founders of the Jewish Primary Day School of Washington, D.C. (now the Milton Gottesman Jewish Day School of the Nation’s Capitol). One of Michelle’s first tasks upon the opening of the school was leading the school lunch program—making her the most overqualified lunch lady in Washington history. Michelle’s strong dedication to American Jewry surpassed solely starting a school: later in life she was an active board member of Ramah Darom in Clayton, Ga., the Jewish Women’s Archive of Brookline, Mass., and her local chapters of the American Jewish Committee in Atlanta, Boston, and New York. Michelle was truly a “woman of valor” (Proverbs 31:10).
Michelle is survived by her husband Marc, her son and daughter-in-law Philip and Amanda Resnikoff Gary, and her daughter and son-in-law Tammy and Mark Friedman. She also leaves behind her mother, Ruth, her sisters, Patricia and Karen, and their husbands Jon Horowitz and Dana Shadrick. Michelle lived to see—and to adore—two grandchildren: Abigail and Miles.   She will be missed by her nephews, nieces, and cousins, as well as friends she made during her years in Washington, Boston, New York, and Atlanta. She loved, and was loved, fiercely.
Please join us in celebrating her life on Thursday morning November 4, 2021, at 10:30, at Arlington Memorial Park, 201 Mount Vernon Highway, in Sandy Springs. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Jewish Committee at https://www.ajc.org/ and the Jewish Women’s Archive at https://www.jwa.org/.

I am so deeply saddened to hear of Michelle's passing. Michelle was one of my very first childhood friends. As we grew up together we shared many happy memories, from our birthday parties, to sleepovers and our little Hebrew group. My mother was Michelle's first grade teacher and absolutely adored her! Michelle will forever hold a very special place in my heart. Sending love and prayers to the family, and may her memory forever be a blessing.

I have so many wonderful memories of growing up with Michelle in Columbus. My favorite is working with her to lead USY in Columbus. I attended the International convention with her and met Marc there with her. I never dreamed at that point that she would end up marrying him. I’m so glad she was able to share a wonderful life with Marc. My heart goes out to the family.

Although we haven't, living in California until recently, had the opportunity to spend much time together, when we were together, it always seemed as if we had been friends with Michelle forever; she was so warm and friendly, not to mention smart and lively. We wish all of you peace and comfort from your good memories of her. Love, Marty, Lois, Aaron, Elliot

The loss of Michelle leaves all of us stunned with a feeling of emptiness and personal loss. This wonderful and exuberant person has been a role model and mentor to many ever since her teenage years wherein she was a leader in every organization in which she served. There are stars in the sky whose light does not reach Earth until long after they are extinguished. Similarly there are people who continue to illuminate this world long after they have passed from it. Clearly Michelle was such a person. Through the lessons she taught, the stories she told, the role model she set, the life she led, and the deeds of goodness, generosity and loving kindness she constantly performed, she will be lovingly remembered by family and friends for a very long time to come. We will never be the same as we were before this loss, but we are ever so much better to have had someone so wonderful to know and love. May the memory of Michelle Gary be an eternal blessing to all who were honored and privileged to know and love her; and may we be comforted in the knowledge that she lived a most productive and joyous, albeit shortened, life.
