  • OBITUARY

David Eric Schwefler, age 82, died on Wednesday, September 29, in Atlanta, GA, of natural causes. Born in Philadelphia, PA, to Curtis Herman Schwefler and Helen Mann Schwefler, David grew up in Merion, PA, graduating from Lower Merion High School. Dave was awarded both football and lacrosse scholarships to the University of Delaware. He was a dedicated and loyal husband, father, and grandfather who devoted his life to his family.

In 1966, Dave married Marcia Rose Beisswenger in Philadelphia. They settled in Ocean City, New Jersey, where their first child was born. In 1970 the Schweflers relocated to Dunwoody, GA, to be closer to Dave’s best friend, brother, and mentor, Dick Schwefler. Dave and Marcia had two more children born in Atlanta.

Dave worked for various software companies in a sales capacity, including Telxon, Fasson, Label Systems Inc., and Strategic Systems & Technology Corporation. He became an expert in the label systems technology industry.

Dave was a firm believer in youth sports programs. At the age of 12, he lost his father and immersed himself in the local sports programs. This led to his football and lacrosse scholarships and ultimately how he raised his children. Dave was a fixture in the Murphey Candler Baseball program, coaching all three of his children. He was also an avid Atlanta Braves fan.

Dave was an active member of St. Martin in the Fields Episcopal Church in Atlanta. Dave was always striving to continue his Christian education, becoming involved with the Stephen Ministry and Education for Ministry. Dave completed a formal two-year training program that prepared him to listen and comfort fellow Christians as a Stephen minister. Dave provided comfort to many care receivers during his time as a Stephen Minister. Through the Education for Ministry program, Dave studied scripture, church history, liturgy, and theology. It is comforting to know that Dave's final resting place will be at his beloved St. Martin in the Fields Episcopal Church.

Dave is survived by his loving wife Marcia (Beisswenger) Schwefler of 55 years; his three children of whom he was so proud: Eric Schwefler (Patti) of Mountain Brook, AL, JD Schwefler (Caroline) of East Cobb, GA, and Linda Stevens (Chris) of Evanston, IL; seven grandchildren ‘the magnificent seven” who he never stopped talking about; Kennedy, Ferris, Luke, Noah, and Ethan Schwefler and Quinn and Andrew Stevens. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Dick Schwefler.

Eric will remember a dad who lived life to the fullest with an optimistic attitude. He will forever cherish the many memories and photos of all the sporting events they attended, including those coached by his father. He will always remember his dad as a fun-loving & original character who loved a cold beer, a proper Philly cheese-steak, and conversations about the Braves and current events.

JD will remember a dad who was a great man with a larger than life personality. His dad had great stories, and he loved listening to him talk about his childhood and life in Philadelphia, his family, and his faith. He will miss the positive and encouraging talks about work and insights his dad had about how to be effective in sales leadership.

Linda will remember a dad whose positive attitude infused everything he did. She will miss their conversations where he started every conversation with “Hi pretty girl” and ended every conversation with “Love you more.” Linda will also miss his big bear hugs, quick-witted jokes, and vibrant stories.

A celebration of Dave’s life will be held on Saturday, October 30, 2021, at 11:30 in the morning (with family visitation at 10:30) at St. Martin in the Fields Episcopal Church in Atlanta, GA, followed by a reception where we will raise our glasses to Dave.

Dave, you will always be remembered as a true gentleman, a gentle and kind soul, with compassion and loyalty to your friends. I have known you professionally and feel privileged to have developed a friendship with you along the way. Your family is in my prayers as I know they feel such sorrow for the vacancy of your physical presence. But I know they feel blessed with so many fond and positive memories of you, and I know these memories will live on infinitely. God rest your kind soul friend.
