Eugene Hayim Davis, beloved husband, father, brother, and uncle,
passed away unexpectedly on July 1, 2021, at his home in Boca
    Raton, Florida.

Gene was born in 1947 in Quincy, Massachusetts and lived there
throughout his childhood. He graduated from the University of
New Hampshire, cum laude, with a BA in Philosophy and English.
He received an MA in English from San Diego State University.

Every day of Gene’s life was spent in small and large explosions of
creativity. Even as a child, he performed ballet, jazz, and tap, as
well as acting in community theater.

Gene was a devoted teacher. He taught for many years at the
Donna Klein Jewish Academy in Boca Raton. Gene’s students
brought him much joy, and he was very passionate about helping
    them reach their potential.

Gene was a prolific writer and was most proud of his novel, My Wife’s Husband: A Family Thriller,
published in 2019. He was working on the sequel, The Forsaken, at the time of his death. Gene’s other
works of fiction have appeared in The Pacific Review, Mystery Weekly, The Otherwise Engaged Literature
and Arts Journal, New Pop Lit, and Literary Heist. His autobiographical-fiction series about life in NYC in
the heyday of Punk Rock was published in 2020 on Gene’s poem, “Howl No More,”
was published in the Blue Lyra Review, in 2015.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Frances and Bernard; and his brother, Michael. He is
survived by his wife, Christel; his son, Jonathan; Jonathan’s fiancée, Ivette; his sister, Jewel; his sister-inlaw, Laura; his brothers-in-law, Philippe (Christine) and Roland (Verena); nieces, Rachel, Anna,
Amandine, Manon, and Stella; nephews, Joshua, Ben, and Kolja; and many cousins and extended family.

Donations can be made in Gene’s memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or to the Yiddish
Book Center, 1021 West Street, Hampshire College, Amherst, MA 01002.

Our sincere condolences to you, Chris & Jonnie. I habe known Gene since we worked together on a film treatment at Pro7 in Munich in 1997 which turned into a long friendship. I‘m so happy to have spend a day with him on a Spree river ferry in Berlin some years ago on his way back from Poland. He was indeed on of the most generous and kind people I have known, and I will miss him dearly. He still had sooo much energy and things he wanted to do - age never seemed to matter. There will always be a candle burning for him here in Berlin, and we hold him dearly in our memories.

This is heartbreaking. Gene and I had so many great laughs together and shared a love for theatre, acting, and film. He was the best office mate and colleague. He always spoke with such love and pride about his wife and son. We told stories to each other all the time, usually with the end result of cracking each other up. We both learned so much about each other, and his tales about Hollywood were legendary. Gene was a massive talent. He left the world too soon.

Gene was a wonderful colleague and friend. Through the years, he delighted us interesting conversation and wonderful stories. My deepest condolences to his beloved family. May his memory be for a blessing.

Mr. Davis was an exceptional English teacher; it was largely because of his classes during high school that I decided to pursue English Literature as one of my college degrees. Kind, funny, and genuinely caring, Mr. Davis was always there for myself and countless other students as we made our way through high school. Upon returning to Donna Klein to visit in the following years, I always looked forward to visiting Mr. Davis. He was a wonderful man, and I will miss him very much.

Please accept my deep sympathy. Gene was a very extraordinary person and teacher who brought the academic standards at DKJA to an exemplary level. I was so fond of him. I am so sorry for your loss.

  • Pamela Tuttelman

Mr Davis taught our daughter AP English at DKJA in 2013 and he kept up with her career. He was one of several outstanding English teachers that honed her writing skills and helped make her the success she is today. We are so sorry for your loss.

Mr. Davis was a phenomenally caring educator who impacted the lives of all 3 of my children while he taught at Donna Klein. My eldest needed to be taught how to write (literally) and Mr. Davis stayed after school several days a week to teach him ,encourage him and even help edit his work. My middle son just clicked with him, and spent time r asking philosophy and esoteric matters with him during free periods and often after school. The classwork and extra editing help was a bonus. My daughter, hearing he was planning to leave, took a Creative Writing course as an elective while in 8th grade just to have the "Davis Experience. " I am forever grateful for hs kind and guiding hand with my children. He was a compassionate man, a teacher with a deep sense of integrity and love for his students, and he will be missed. My heartfelt condolences to your whole family.

Mr. Davis was not only an amazing human, but also a wonderful teacher. The news hit me and fellow students very hard. He was a friend and a mentor and someone who truly loved his craft. May his memory be a blessing.

  • Rick Goldstein

Gene, Mike, and I were friends since we met at summer camp. I’m thankful for their friendship and hope you are well.

  • Laura and David Sherry (Benjamin and Layla)

Mr Davis was an amazing educator and made a profound impact on both our children who he taught more than one class during their k-12 tenure at DKJA. Both Ben and Layla often refer to things they leaned in mr Davis class and funny experiences they had with him. He believed in both of them and made a significant and lasting impact on them. His memory will live on with all the students fortunate enough to have been in one of his classes. Our sincere and heartfelt condolences to mr Davis family and may his memory always be for a blessing.

Although we didn’t know Gene for many years we will always remember him. His great smile, wry sense of humor and intelligence made talking with him a unique experience. He was easy to get to know and the moment we met, it seemed as if we’d known each other for years. People like Gene don’t come into your life very often and we wish he could have stayed in our lives for many more years. We’re grateful to have known him for the time we did and we’ll remember him fondly for the rest of our lives. Kris and Johnathan, our thoughts and prayers are with both of you in this time of loss. Knowing Gene meant getting to know you both as well and that has been a truly great experience. Holiday dinners with all of you were always a high point in our year. We will always be here for you and hope to see you again later.
