  • OBITUARY

Miriam “Mickie” Greenberg Eisenberg Krinsky died on January 11, 2018 at the age of 92. A rare native Atlantan, she was born there on June 18, 1925 to Charles and Chaya Leah Greenberg, the first member of her family not born in Poland. She married her high school sweetheart, David Eisenberg, and together they raised five children and helped build the foundation of Atlanta’s vibrant Jewish community. Her life was characterized by her warmth, strong opinions, community involvement, charm, and optimism. Mickie was a passionate leader for many years at the Hebrew Academy of Atlanta, the Jewish Federation, Hadassah, and Congregation Shearith Israel. After earning a degree from Sophie Newcomb College in New Orleans, Mickie began her professional career as a social worker with Jewish Family Services, helping to resettle Displaced Persons after World War II. Over the years, she pursued several part-time vocations, including welcoming visitors to Atlanta as a Gray Lines tour guide, working in a wholesale showroom at the Apparel Mart, and eventually settling into a decades-long career as a travel agent. Mickie’s passion for travel took her all over the world, often on trips with other travel agents, and she came home from every one of them with new friends. Her sociability is legendary, and a favorite family story recalls the time she took ten minutes to return to the dinner table from answering the phone, then replied when asked who called, “Wrong number.” Mickie relocated to Portland, Maine about a decade ago, giving her children and grandchildren there the privilege of living near her and caring for her. In the last years of her life, Mickie moved with aplomb through the stages of dementia, a cruel disease, but one which brought to the fore her essential kindness and grace. She was well-loved and cared for by many wonderful people at Fallbrook Woods and Hospice of Southern Maine, too many to name, and especially by Judith McAllister. Mickie’s greatest pleasure and pride came from her children and grandchildren. She taught them well many of her rules to live by, including the very useful, “Just ask; the worst they can do is tell you no.” Mickie is predeceased by David Eisenberg, by her second husband, Joseph Krinsky, by her daughter-in-law Julie Goell, and by her five brothers and sisters and their spouses. She is survived by her children and grandchildren and their spouses: Avner Eisenberg (Zev Eisenberg and Cheryl Pedersen), Scott and Herma “Sugar” Eisenberg (Ariel and Cara Eisenberg), Cary and Dana Eisenberg, Joel Eisenberg and Suzanne Hanein (David and Matthew Eisenberg), and Carol Eisenberg and David Simpson (Maxine, Charlotte, and Elias Eisenberg), and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Foundation for Hospital Art, www.hospitalart.com, 4238 Highborne Drive, Marietta, GA 30066 or Atlanta Jewish Academy, www.atljewishacademy.org, 5200 Northland Drive, Atlanta GA 30342. A service will be held Sunday, January, 14, 2018 in the chapel at Atlanta Jewish Academy. Arrangements by Dressler’s Jewish Funeral Care, Atlanta (770) 451-4999.

I am so sorry to hear of Mickie's death. Her kindness and friendliness introduced me to volunteering for the Women's Division of Federation. It was truly a joy working with her.

I have known Mickey for many years. In fact she was really a friend of my older sister Beedie. After I married and return from Israel I lived o Helen Drive across from Mickey; Years later I moved to Victor RD and again I was across the street from Mickey. It seemed live our path just always cross. I remember her as an active community worker and a good friend she always was . Mickey you will be truly missed even though the last few years we lived far apart from each other.,

To the Family, Mickie, has been missed by many for a long time and will continue to be missed for years to come. Mickie will always remain in my heart, as her sisters, and brothers are. My heart is breaking not just for myself but for all who loved Mickie. There is a huge void in my life forever now that you and your siblings are all gone. Once again you are all together. Much love to each of you. Too many to names to put here.
