  • OBITUARY

Virginia Mary Cunningham (nee Warnke) passed away peacefully in Atlanta, GA on Sunday Nov 12, 2017, in the presence of loving family and caregivers at the Fountainview Center community. Virginia (Ginny) was born in Toledo, OH on March 24, 1934 to Harold & Gladys Warnke. She attended St Ursula Girls Academy and Mary Manse College, where she met her life long (to this very day) friends, and then later, met William F. (Bill) Cunningham. Bill & Ginny were married on Dec 29, 1956 in Toledo, and then moved to the Chicago area, where Bill’s career was ascendant. While raising two sons, she attended Purdue University and obtained her Masters in English and started teaching. This was during a time when married women with young children were not supposed to pursue careers. She then earned certification in teaching Remedial Reading (and later Reading Recovery), becoming part of the first generation of teachers specializing in helping at-risk students. She was a popular teacher and earned accolades for her service in the public schools on the South Side of Chicago. Once Bill and Ginny became empty nesters, they moved back to Toledo, where Ginny continued mentoring children on their reading skills and reconnecting with her family. It was there she was at her happiest, being surrounded by her parents, siblings, cousins, friends and nieces & nephews. Bill & Ginny moved one last time to Houston, TX, to be close to their son, Chris, and his family. She continued her teaching there, while Bill eased into semi-retirement in the city where he lived in the 1950’s. She finished her teaching career at the prestigious St John’s Academy, where she was adored by staff & students alike. After her retirement, she stayed busy by volunteering at her church, St Vincent de Paul, and at the Houston Rodeo. And playing bridge; lots of bridge. She survived some very serious health issues in 2015 and bounced back almost as good as ever. She continued to live in her Bellaire, TX home, under her own terms thru 2016. Unfortunately, she suffered a serious stroke in Feb 2017 that became her greatest challenge. Her sons relocated her to Atlanta in Oct 2017, where she could receive the level of care she needed. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold & Gladys; her loving husband, Bill; her oldest brother, Robert, and his wife, Beverly. She is survived by her two sons: Kevin Cunningham of Atlanta GA (with wife, Jenice & granddaughter, Maury) and Chris Cunningham of Houston, TX (with wife Lisa, grandsons: Kyle & Christopher and granddaughter, Carley); her brother, Richard (with wife Anita) and by a multitude of cousins, nieces, nephews, lifelong friends and all the children whose lives she touched by her commitment to teaching those less fortunate. The family would like to also thank all the wonderful and caring staff at The Concierge (Houston) and Fountainview Center & Weinstein Hospice (Atlanta) for the comfort and care they gave Ginny in her final days. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a contribution to Weinstein Hospice, 3150 Howell Mill Rd, Atlanta GA 30327 in memory of Virginia Cunningham and all that they did for her.
